We are living in a historic moment.
If the world feels unstable right now — economically, politically, culturally — you’re not imagining it. According to historian Neil Howe in his recent book The Fourth Turning Is Here, societies move through 80–100 year cycles. The final phase of that cycle — the “Fourth Turning” — is a winter season marked by disruption, crisis, and institutional distrust.
The last Fourth Turning began with the 1929 stock market crash and ended in 1945 at the conclusion of World War II. What followed was a season of rebuilding and growth. And what ended that winter? A shared, unifying purpose.
Freedom.
Howe suggests our current Fourth Turning began in 2008 with the financial collapse and may extend into the mid-2030s. That means March 2026 isn’t random turbulence — it’s part of a larger historical pattern of global unrest, economic uncertainty, and social realignment.
Here’s why that matters to you as a leader.
Winter seasons test clarity. They magnify disengagement. They expose weak culture. They pressure talent retention. When the external world feels chaotic, employees look internally for stability. If they don’t find it in leadership, anxiety rises and performance declines.
This is where purpose becomes more than inspiration — it becomes strategy.
I recently spoke to a Vistage CEO group about the high cost of disengagement and the loss of productivity many organizations are experiencing. One CEO connected the dots immediately: purpose alignment inside a company directly addresses the instability described in The Fourth Turning framework.

In uncertain times, you cannot control global cycles. But you can control how you lead through them.
I’ve learned something about myself in these seasons: I choose to communicate hope, to help others, and to make people happy. That’s my purpose. Living it daily gives me clarity. And helping leaders discover theirs is my calling.

And when you give your team a shared purpose, you give them direction in the storm.
Winter does not last forever. But purposeful leadership determines how strong you emerge when spring arrives.
