The contrast between their utilitarian calls and their ornate songs reflects the dual nature of bird communication—functional and expressive. The song sparrow’s vocal versatility makes it a favorite subject in studies of avian learning and communication, and its presence is often a welcome sign of spring in many parts of the continent.
