Hi everyone welcome to our channel we are Lazy K Mountain Homestead Homestead on the Cumberland Plateau Tennessee!!
Today I want to make vintage recipe that I made first probably when I was a teenager back in the 1970s so it's vintage 🤣 as am I!
this may seem like a lot of information from the length of me talking, But it really is super easy!!
Christmas Gumdrop Nougat Candy
RECIPE
2 tbsp butter at room temperature
2 bags 11 oz each white chocolate chips or white melting chocolate (not almond bark ) or you can use the white baker's chocolate but just make sure that it's 11 oz each so that would be 22 oz
2 bags 10 oz each mini marshmallows
1 and 1/2 cups gumdrops You can use the multicolor or whatever you prefer you can also use orange slices or a bag of the multi slices, a large bag of those. if you're using the slices you want to make sure that you cut them up in pieces and not just halves
as see in my video you need to use a double boiler I've never tried this in a microwave because I think that it changes the chocolates texture and you really want it to be smooth so you can use the double boiler system like I do.
~first get your pan ready or your dish ready what you're going to pour your candy in when it's ready use an 8x8 or a 9x9 baking dish and line it with foil parchment paper and or plastic wrap making sure to adhere it to the size of your and the bottom of your pan as closely as possible. I did half of this recipe so I used a 5x9 dish and that made quite a few candies.
with your double boiler ready with the water simmering you're going to want to put on the glass or the actual double boiler pan on top of that and to that add the the butter letting melt
then add the 2 bags white chips stirring as they're melting once they're melted you want to pour both bags of the mini marshmallows in.
this step with adding the marshmallows does take some time I know I said in the video you don't have to watch it quite as much as you do the chocolate but you do have to fold it so it will start melting into your white chocolate so that takes probably about 8 minutes to go ahead and fold it in there and it's going to create that nougat, You want make sure all your marshmallows are melted.
once you've created your Nougat which is your marshmallow combined with your white chips you'll notice that it's kind of fluffy and sticky and very thick . You want to go ahead and take your top part off your double boiler or the glass bowl as I did in the video and set it on a pot holder and let it cool for 3 minutes during the 3 minutes you can cut all of your gumdrops in half and wait for that 3 minutes because then you're going to combine your gumdrops a little at a time into your nougat and folding them in.
You don't want to stir just fold them in. It just takes a couple minutes to do that and you want to make sure that they are dispersed pretty evenly through your nougat because you want to be able to see all these gumdrops once you cut your candy the next morning.
now when you put all your gumdrops in and you're happy with the way it looks it's going to be really sticky as it starts to cool, pour all of this nougat gumdrop mixture into your prepared pan now I did use foil so I did spray my foil with spray oil that's up to you.
You can use butter whatever but I just think it releases better from the foil.
as you saw I took a piece of plastic wrap and I set it on top of my nougat mixture and I just press down to make sure that it was evenly in my dish and also that made sure there were no air bubbles because you're going to find it it's pretty sticky and thick and it's going to be hard to do it with a spoon right away.
when you're satisfied with how it looks let it cool on the counter for a bit where you feel like you can put it the refrigerator, I waited about 15 to 20 minutes and it was completely cool.
Place it in your fridge put the plastic wrap back on top of it and keep overnight and like I said in the video I think about 5 to 6 hours later I checked it and it was hard but I went ahead and let it go overnight and it was completely hard and beautiful!!
now you're going to want to take your candy out of your foil or plastic wrap onto a clean cutting board, you'll need a heavy duty knife to cut through this and you're going to cut them lengthwise into little logs as seen in the video
now cut each one into an inch or bite size and inch is a really good size because you'll be able to see how beautiful those gumdrops come through and they just look like little glass panes or stained glass in each one of the candies.
it's best to keep in the fridge and let come to room temperature before you serve them they're easier to eat that way.
Enjoy~Willis and Denise
