Exploring the African Migrant Dilemma in Israel

Описание: PERSPECTIVES | After perilous journeys to reach safety, many migrants can spend years in-limbo awaiting for their asylum claims to be processed. Israel's dealing with migrants — particularly African migrants, has led to protests across Tel Aviv. Some are in-solidarity with a government push to deport or jail them. Many of those behind that government policy are Israeli residents of south Tel Aviv, who claim these migrants have made their neighborhood dangerous. On the other hand, International Migrants Day highlights positive migrant contributions to their host countries.

Story:

In 2006, over 2,500 undocumented migrants entered Israel. In 2010, over 14,000 undocumented migrants entered.

In 2018, over 30,000 undocumented migrants live in Israel.

It is the migrants and asylum seekers, legal and illegal, that look after the elderly in Israel, build Israel's infrastructure and farm the land.

As of October 2018, almost 95,000 legal migrants work in Israel.

Migrant crime has been in the spotlight following the murder of Silvana Tsegal, a 12 year-old Eritrean asylum seeker who was found dead by her mother in their apartment in the Hatikva neighborhood in Tel Aviv.

There is a large resistance in Israel who believe the African migrants are work migrants rather than refugees and should go back to their countries of origins.

‘Eritrea is a very safe place today — no war, no economic sanctions. Europe is giving them money, most of them can go back,’ activist Shefi Paz said.

However, others continue to believe in migrant workers being productive members of Israeli society, culture, and economy.

‘International Migrants Day is a day intend to mark the contribution of migrants all over the world to their hosting countries. These are the people that assist our elderly mothers and fathers and build our houses,’ Hotline for Refugees and Migrants’ Sigal Rozen said.
