Even among the countless fascinating reptile species, turtles undoubtedly stand out. Turtles are the oldest reptile group dating back 200 million years (even before the Jurassic era!) and have a plethora of amazing anatomical adaptations that allowed them to thrive for so long. From the smallest mud turtles to majestic leatherbacks, turtles have a beautifully unique biology that’s fascinating to learn about. For example, did you know that a turtle’s shell is actually a set of modified ribs? Or that a turtle’s sex is determined by the temperature in which the egg was incubated?

In these videos, you’ll learn general information about turtles, which will be tied to the turtle’s many anatomical structures. We’ll also explain how each organ’s structure connects with its function. Anatomy and physiology are fundamentally linked, and learning about the structures of anatomy and connecting them to physiological functions is a great way to achieve a deeper understanding of both concepts.

This dissection lab is for anyone who is curious about turtle anatomy, wants to cover reptilian anatomy for AP Biology, missed the turtle dissection during biology class, or just wants to have a fun time.
