Derry member Lynn Clements presents The Civil Rights Movement: Books for Children and Young Adults (and their grown-ups). The Civil Rights movement has been addressed by many outstanding authors and illustrators of books for young readers. This class introduces some of these books, organized around the destinations of the upcoming Derry Church Civil Rights trip.
This class considers books about the life of Dr. Martin Luther King and Coretta Scott King, moving on to books set in Birmingham, Selma, Montgomery and Memphis. Leaders of the movement, such as John Lewis, are featured, as well as lesser known allies and activists, such as Rabbi Abraham Heschel.
Talking about racism and hard history with children and teens can be complicated, and yet, to understand the importance of the Civil Rights Movement, discussion of racial injustice and inequity is critical. Age-appropriate books to start these conversations are recommended.
