Panjshir Province is one of the most scenic and historically significant regions in Afghanistan. Located in the northeastern part of the country, it is nestled within the Hindu Kush mountain range and is known for its stunning natural beauty, including lush green valleys, rugged mountains, and the Panjshir River that flows through the region.
The name is believed to refer to a legend about five brothers who heroically defended the valley or helped build a dam in the region. These "five lions" became symbolic of bravery and strength, which aligns with Panjshir's reputation as a stronghold of resistance throughout Afghan history.
The name Panjshir (پنجشیر) comes from Persian/Dari and is composed of two words:
• "Panj" (پنج) meaning five
• "Shir" (شیر) meaning lion
⛓️ Ahmad Shah Massoud, known as the "Lion of Panjshir", is buried in a beautifully designed mausoleum located in Zuhal Post, Bazarak District, in the heart of Panjshir Valley, Afghanistan.
