New estimates published by the National Energy System Operator (NESO) suggest the UK’s push to reach Net Zero by 2050 could cost up to £4.5 trillion over 25 years. The figures include around £585bn for households to switch from boilers to heat pumps, about £1tn for new wind farms and power pylons, and up to £2.6tn for electric vehicles and charging infrastructure.
NESO estimates this would mean spending around £182bn a year. Critics say the costs are far higher than expected, while Reform UK says Net Zero should be scrapped.
