Today I’m taking on the legendary Black Tusk, one of Canada’s most iconic peaks. The summit ends with a Class 4 scramble up an exposed section of an ancient volcano.
⚠️ Important Disclaimer: This final section is not a regular hiking trail. It is a Class 4 scramble with real exposure and loose volcanic rock. Attempting the chimney route is at your own risk, and I do not recommend it unless you already have climbing or scrambling experience. Unfortunately, there have been tragic accidents here, so please treat this peak with respect.
There’s no shame in turning back at the ridge to Black Tusk — the views of Garibaldi Lake and the surrounding mountains are equally spectacular, and for most people this is the safer, smarter turnaround point — and a much safer option you can still be proud of.

🧗 Safety Tips for Climbing Black Tusk
• ✅ Check weather and trail reports before going.
• ✅ Tell someone you trust where you’re going and when you’ll be back.
• ✅ It’s always safer to go with a buddy — I went solo in this video, but I don’t recommend it.
• ✅ Helmet is essential — wear it before you reach the rock face, as rockfall from above is common.
• ✅ The third chimney is the most well-known route to the summit, but conditions change. Look for flagging tape and follow the safest line.
• ✅ Test every handhold and foothold — the shale rock here is loose and can break easily. Be careful and proceed with caution.
• ✅ Watch for climbers above and below you. Falling rocks are a real hazard. Always give a shout when descending and ascending, and warn others if you dislodge a rock.
• ✅ Carry a satellite messenger or GPS device in case you need rescue.
• ✅ At the summit, if it’s windy, keep a low center of gravity and move carefully.
