Gordon's life serves as a channel for emotional expression and creative inspiration, particularly evident in 'Tell Me and I’ll Listen,' which stands as the most personal, emotionally-naked, and introspective track on 'Traveler.' In this song, Gordon explores a heartfelt conversation between a mother and daughter, in which the daughter encourages her mother to embrace her emotions fully. “The song is about a conversation between a mother and daughter, where the daughter is trying to give her mother permission to let herself fall apart and feel whatever sadness and pain she has been holding in. It is a role reversal where the child is attempting to take care of the parent,” Gordon says. “It’s about the impact of generational trauma and was inspired by my relationship with my mother.”
The genesis of 'Tell Me and I’ll Listen’ began as a stream of consciousness writing session away from the piano, evolving into a heartfelt dialogue between Gordon and her mother. “My relationship with her is very important to me, and throughout the years I have longed for her to unburden herself. I wanted that for my Grandmothers before they passed, and to my knowledge it never happened. I feel like I am just now learning how to do this for myself; to honor my own feelings of sadness, anger, and longing, and allow them to be expressed without justification or permission on some giant equalizing scale out there in the stratosphere. My Mom had to raise her siblings, and has always dismissed her own pain in the face of other people's experience. I want her to feel free, to count herself and her own feelings as important, and to express them in a way that feels healing,” Gordon shares. “I wanted the song to feel like eavesdropping at first, and then cracking your heart wide open.”
As Gordon reflects on her experience writing this song, she reveals the profound intimacy she experienced during its creation, likening the process to treading carefully around an open wound. “This song was incredibly personal, so when writing it I felt like an open wound, like I had to be protective and careful with it. Once I played it for Rachel and we decided to record it, the track became more about the arrangement and the shaping of it. That felt less vulnerable, more like trying to direct a little short film of it,” Gordon shares. “We were thinking about how to make the beats of the song land and translate. It was Rachel's idea to have the bridge get big, and then the voice and piano to sort of rise out of the ashes sonically, which felt really right.”
Gordon collaborated with producer Rachel Efron (best known for her collaborations with artists Arden Alexa, David Hobbes and Norzin Chomphel) to bring the production vision to life. "I hoped to convey a calm demeanor belying a well of frustration, grief, anger, and passion,” Efron says. “I envisioned Kyra leading on piano for this one. I didn't want to add too much else apart from the real strings. I loved the idea of enforcing the lyrical journey - pure sweetness except for the bridge, where we're suddenly floored by the emotion; a sonic counterpoint to all that's been withheld all these years. Then, the final chorus gathers our pieces back together.” Efron was most excited about the direction of Gordon’s vocal delivery ’I was proud that in our vocal sessions we found a way to maintain her poise and power while exploring sincerity and vulnerability,” Efron shares. “The song is very honest and expressed with wholehearted lovingness, which sets it apart as a track on ‘Traveler.’”
Remarkably, this has sparked ongoing real-life conversations between Gordon and her mother, underscoring the transformative power of music as a catalyst for emotional connection, healing, and growth. This is Gordon’s highest hope for this song. “It would be very gratifying if my listeners experienced catharsis and it inspired emotional conversations with a loved one.”
