The Sinulog Festival, often celebrated by Cebuano communities in Las Piñas and throughout the Philippines, is a religious and cultural celebration honoring the Santo Niño (the Child Jesus).
Key meanings and elements include:
Significance: It commemorates the acceptance of Christianity by the Filipino people in 1521.
"Pit Señor!": Participants shout "Pit Señor" (short for sangpit sa Señor), which means to call upon or plead to the Holy Child.
The Dance: The festival features a distinctive dance with two steps forward and one step backward, mimicking the sulog (water current) of the Cebu river.
Origin: It originates from a 16th-century tradition where Rajah Humabon's advisor, Baladhay, was miraculously cured by the image of the Santo Niño.
Local Participation: While originating in Cebu, the celebration is held in various parts of the country, including by groups in Las Piñas, such as the Pilar Youth Dance Company, who perform the traditional dance.
The festival is characterized by colorful costumes, street dancing, and drumbeats held every third Sunday of January.
