Video from downtown Columbia and the campus of the University of South Carolina of major flash flooding that occurred along the Rocky Branch Creek basin from a severe thunderstorm this afternoon that left roads under feet of water and impacted buildings on the campus of USC.
The RCWinds mesonet in MLK park recorded a total of 2.95” of rain in a period of about 1hr and 20 minutes with many other locations in downtown Columbia recording over 2” of rainfall.
The USGS Gauge for Rocky Branch Creek located at Main and Whaley Streets recorded a river rise from 1.5 to 11.75’ between 1:45 and 2:45pm EDT. A total river rise of 10.25’ in 1 hour.
The USGS Gauge for Rocky Branch Creek located on Pickens Street recorded a streamflow increase from 1.51CFS at 2:55pm to 3,020CFS at 3:10PM (Cubic feet per second). For reference Rocky Branch Creek which is a very small urban stream went from a base flow of around 550 gallons per minute to over 1.12 million gallons per minute in a span of only 15 minutes.
