At a flag ceremony, the UN Security Council welcomed its newly elected members, the E10, who join the five permanent members in maintaining peace and security and bringing regional experience to deliberations.
The Council has 15 members, with 10 elected by the 193‑member General Assembly for two‑year terms; this year includes states directly tied to agenda items, including Somalia, the DRC, Colombia, Denmark and Panama. Proposals for mandatory recusal of members party to disputes face likely vetoes from the permanent five.
