In Syria’s shifting political landscape, journalists are navigating a fragile space between new freedoms and old fears. Self-censorship remains widespread. Minority voices are struggling to be heard. And women reporters are pushing against structural barriers to claim their place in the media.
In this episode of Diversity Matters, host Tanya Sakzewski speaks with award-winning Syrian investigative journalist Mais Katt about what has changed since the fall of the Assad regime. She describes a media environment where opportunity and pressure exist side by side, where women journalists face both renewed hope and new forms of restriction, and where diversity remains deeply contested.
Mais discusses her work supporting women reporters through her initiative Women Who Won the War, the importance of feminist perspectives in conflict reporting, and why Syria’s media must reflect the country’s complex social mosaic. She also examines the ongoing marginalisation of minority communities, the persistence of fear, and the international responsibility to protect freedom of expression.
This conversation offers a rare inside view of journalism in a post-conflict society still defining its future.
