According to his aides, four unidentified gunmen stormed his residence yesterday, disabled security cameras, and shot him dead. The attack follows reported warnings regarding lapses in his security, marking a violent end for the 53-year-old figure who once acted as the Western-friendly face of his father’s oppressive regime. Educated in London and fluent in English, Saif al-Islam was initially seen as a reformist but staunchly defended his father during the 2011 NATO-backed uprising, threatening “rivers of blood”. Despite being wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity, he attempted a political comeback in 2021 by running for president. However, he was barred from contesting elections.
