Vampires, goblins, and monsters under your bed. What do they all have in common? Kids believe in them, and they are scared of them. If you’re watching this video you probably don’t believe in them, but maybe you “used to”. Knowing how to talk about things we used to believe in or used to do is an important part of speaking fluently.

If you’ve seen my video on present simple tense for routines, (which you can find in the description), you’ll know that we can talk about things we do regularly or routinely using subject + V1.

For example, I wake up at 08:00, I brush my teeth and I take a shower. These are the routine things I do nowadays. But how about if I want to talk about my routines from the past, that I no longer do? Well, that’s when we can use ‘Used to’.

Let’s take three common examples of things children do, that adults (hopefully) don’t: Believe in the Tooth Fairy, play in the playground after school, and watch Power Rangers.
If I asked an adult about whether they do these things now, they would reply with “I don’t believe in the Tooth Fairy, I don’t play play in the playground at school, and I don’t watch Power Rangers.

How about if I asked if they “used to” do these things? Then their answer would probably be a little bit different. Used to describes past routines, or things that we did regularly in the past, but no longer do.
