(26 Jul 2012) Italy's leading trade unions staged a protest on Thursday not far from the parliament to highlight to problem of the "esodati," workers caught in a welfare limbo between work and retirement.
Hundreds of early-retired people fell under the axe of the austerity measures and many of them are now in a limbo: too young to retire and too old to find a new job.
In Italy, they are called them "esodati", because they made a sort of exodus from their jobs.
They are those who signed an agreement with the employer for an early-retirement and after the pension reform ruled by the Monti's government found themselves without a pension.
The pension reform aims at cutting public spending, by raising the retirement age and the years of insurance contribution.
Those who who agreed for an early-retirement had an economic incentive from the employer to leave the job and wait for the pension age.
Sandro Faraone was 60 and and had a defibrillator installed in his chest when he received the offer to get 1,100 euros per month until he reached the retirement age two years later.
The pension reform ruined his plan and overturned the terms of the agreement. Now he should work six more years, but it is not an easy task to find a new job at his age.
The pension reform is now stranded in the finance commission of the Italian senate, where thousands of amendments have been presented by all the political parties.
Many amendments concern the "esodati."
