The Goddess cults of Crete had a significant influence on Cretan Priestess culture and women in society during the Minoan civilization. Modern museums are filled with extraordinary Cretan art, which portray females as figures of particular power and respect. The “Mountain Mother” or “Mistress of Animals,” a Minoan nature goddess, who frequently shows up on stones and gold jewelry, often flanked by two lions, griffons or wild goats. Another female figure or a prominent priestess – is the Snake Goddess. Sir Arthur Evans discovered her circa 1600 BC and named her the Snake Goddess.She is formidable with two arms raised upwards holding serpents in both hands, her bare breasts showing her life-giving power.
