Catholic Morning Prayer – February 20, 2026
Friday after Ash Wednesday
Welcome to the Catholic Morning Prayer for February 20, 2026.
As we continue our Lenten journey, the Word of God invites us to reflect on the true meaning of fasting and penance. The Lord calls us beyond external observance to a conversion that touches our hearts, our relationships, and our concern for others.
In the First Reading (Isaiah 58:1–9a), God speaks with striking clarity. Through the prophet, the Lord challenges a people who fast outwardly while neglecting justice, mercy, and compassion. True fasting, God reveals, is not merely abstaining from food, but loosening the bonds of injustice, caring for the poor, and responding to the needs of others. Penance that does not lead to love becomes empty.
In the Gospel (Matthew 9:14–15), Jesus Christ explains that fasting finds its meaning in relationship with Him. While the Bridegroom is present, there is joy; when He is taken away, fasting takes its rightful place. Jesus teaches us that fasting is not an end in itself, but a means to deepen our longing for God.
Together, these readings show us that authentic Lenten practices unite interior conversion with outward charity. When fasting leads us to greater compassion, humility, and attentiveness to Christ, it becomes pleasing to God.
🕊️ Resolution for the Day:
Today, I will unite my fasting or sacrifice with an act of charity or kindness toward someone in need.
Live Lent today through sincere fasting, prayer, and charity.
