Asano Terao was an Issei born in Hiroshima in 1897. She came to the United States after an arranged marriage with an Issei man who had immigrated to Seattle, Washington, and briefly returned to Japan to find a wife. While Mrs. Terao was not technically a picture bride, having met her husband in person prior to their marriage, she traveled to the US along with many women who were. In this Japanese-language clip, she describes the disappointment of some of her travel companions when they arrived to find that their husband’s face didn’t match the photos they had exchanged.
