Our usual compost tea recipe : )
Compost Tea Ingredients
(Can be customized depending on the time of year, type of plant, what you have lying around the shed waiting to get used up, etc. We haven't been paid to show any of the products in this video, these are just ones we have used and liked and carry at our Nursery.)
5 Tables Spoons of Each of the Following:
-Kelp Meal
-Cottonseed Meal
-Alfalfa Meal
-Blood Meal
-Bat Guano (The type high in Phosphorus)
-Microbe Boost (By Foxfarm)
-Compost, Coffee Grounds and Earthworm Castings are also great additions
Unsulphured Molasses can also be added at the end, but only if you are going to use the tea right away
(Also at a ratio of 1 Table Spoon per Gallon)
Add all the ingredients into a sock or pantyhose stocking and steep in 5 gallons of water anywhere from 6-48 hours, the longer the soak time the longer the stronger the tea. The resulting brew is concentrated (however you could still apply the concentrated tea without burning the plants for very nutrient deficient plants) so apply the tea to plants at a ratio of 1 cup of tea to 1 gallon of water. In general the best practice is to make sure plants are well hydrated prior to applying any type of fertilizer. Aeration with Air Stones or a pump extends the life for about a week (without molasses) but putting the tea in the fridge will enable it to last several days.
A little more information about the various ingredients:
Alfalfa Meal
An amazing microbial food that has the naturally occuring strong growth hormone triacontanol and is high in essential trace nutrients and amino acids, it improves nutrient transfer and uptake and energizes soil bacteria, yielding more flavorful, sweeter aromatic crops.
Kelp Meal
Made from Seaweed, this is a fantastic organic source of potassium and over 70 vitamins and minerals, it enhances root growth and makes plants more pest and disease resistant, with larger foliage more resistant to drought and frost, and yield fruit with increased nutritional value.
Worm Castings
(aka Vermicompost)
Worm castings act as a soil conditioner, loosening compacted soils, improving aeration and conserving moisture. Worms kill pathogenic bacteria (like E. Coli and Salmonella) and facilitate the plants ability to uptake and store nutrients.
Bat Guano (High Phosphorus)
Promotes root development, increases bloom production, fruit flavor and yield.
Blood Meal
A rich source of Nitrogen, to revitalize and restore yellowing leaves and fertilize heavy feeding plants.
Cottonseed Meal
Acidifies as it feeds, helps plants to take in magnesium and iron, lowers PH, and slowly releases nutrients over time. It aerates dense soils and helps retain moisture in sandy soils.
Microbe Boost
This foxfarm product acts as a microbial inoculant, increasing root efficiency and enabling plants to uptake more nutrients...it’s good stuff!
Unsulphured Molasses
A soil “sweetener”, it encourages the growth of beneficial fungi and bacteria and is a rich source of micro and macro nutrients. Add only to tea you will use right away.
