Coigach Wester Ross North West Highlands Scotland
Our trip to Coigach came about as a result of an aborted plan to climb Stac Pollaidh, which obviously involved driving down the single track road to Stac Pollaidh car park. To complete the day, I had also spotted Achnahaird Bay on Google maps, which is further down that road and looked like a fabulous bay and beach. With the weather forecast variable and a host of competing alternatives in other locations, I had also identified the remains of a broch (an iron age circular dwelling house with two concentric walls, only found in Scotland) further down the coast at Achlochan. So on the day, without needing the time required to climb Stac Pollaidh, we plumped for Coigach’s range of other activities with low expectations and just hoped we got some okay weather.
Both the weather and Coigach vastly exceeded our expectations and this turned out to be my favourite day of the holiday. Stac Pollaidh looked mighty fine in the sunshine and Achnahaird Bay was stunning with an exhilarating walk along the rugged coast to a beautiful beach with a gallery view of the most famous Assynt and Coigach mountains. The broch, though just a small ruin, was clearly visible and fascinatingly sandwiched between two abandoned 19th century cottages, which used the broch for part of their structure and the view across the Northern Minch to the Summer Isles was glorious.
However, what made the day above all was a wrong turning which we took on the way to the broch which led to us driving a circular route around the Coigach peninsula. The road had some elevation, so gave us some of the most spectacular views we’ve seen in Scotland, clockwise of the mountains and anti-clockwise of the Summer Isles. All completely by chance and we were so glad we hadn’t just turned around.
I hope you enjoy the video.
More adventures from the North West Highlands to come in the next few weeks.
