A crankcase heater is used in HVAC and refrigeration systems to prevent refrigerant from migrating into the compressor’s crankcase during off cycles—especially in colder ambient temperatures.
Its main purpose is to keep the oil in the compressor warm, so any refrigerant that might otherwise condense in the crankcase stays in vapor form. This prevents oil dilution and compressor damage during startup, such as liquid slugging or bearing washout.
