David’s Mekong river cruise on Emerald Harmony began in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh.
Before the cruise set off, he got to have a look around the exciting city, starting with the incredibly ornate buildings of the Royal Palace. Decorated with golden spires and detailed wall frescoes, it was a definite highlight. An authentic way to see the real Cambodia is to jump on a tuk-tuk! At night Phnom Penh really came alive and David’s heart was racing as his tuk-tuk navigated the traffic chaos, but somehow it all flowed smoothly!
While today tourists are welcomed to Cambodia with open arms and big smiles, in the 1970s it was a different place. A visit to the killing fields and memorials at Choeng Ek was a sombre experience for David, but a way to acknowledge the dark days of Cambodian history and appreciate the resilience of the people.
Emerald Harmony left Phnom Penh behind and cruised peacefully through the countryside. In Kampong Tralach, the first stop along the river, David took a ride on a traditional ox-cart, a method of transport that Cambodians have been using for a thousand years! A short ride away, in the centuries-old city of Oudong, David visited the beautifully decorated main temple. As part of the EmeraldPLUS cultural experience he and the other Emerald guests were blessed with prosperity, happiness and spiritual growth in a moving ceremony performed by monks.
Back on board after an incredible 3 course dinner, guests were treated to a cultural music and dance performance on the sundeck. It was a fitting farewell to Cambodia, as overnight they crossed the border into Vietnam.
