Background introduction /
This song was released on February 1, 1969, and was the major debut song of Hiroshi Uchiyamada and Cool Five, and their biggest hit. It is also the representative song of Kiyoshi Maekawa, who became a solo singer after leaving the group. Hiroshi Uchiyamada and Cool Five were an exclusive band of the grand cabaret "Ginbasha" in Nagasaki City, and had a wide repertoire including Latin and jazz. In 1968, Kiyoshi Maekawa, who had made a name for himself as a nightclub singer in Sasebo, was appointed as the lead vocalist. With this hit song, they won the 11th Japan Record Awards Newcomer Award in the same year (1969), and also made their first appearance in the 20th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen. In Kohaku, it was also sung as Maekawa's solo at the 51st NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen in 2000 and the 57th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen in 2006. It is a well-known song in Japanese enka.
The lyrics are a local Nagasaki song about a serious love affair and heartbreak. The combination of "Nagasaki" and "Rain" is not because it often rains in Nagasaki City, but because "Rain" is very suitable as a metaphor for tears when describing a woman's sadness and tears when she breaks up with her lover. In fact, the lyrics of "Nagasaki was raining again today" clearly show the relationship between rain and tears, such as “The rain of tears spilling down my cheeks”.
The stone pavement in the lyrics refers to Oura Catholic Church, the oldest existing Christian building in Japan, and there are many places around it that have stone pavements as after the opening of the country by the Edo Shogunate, foreign residents of Nagasaki requested that the roads to churches be paved with cobblestones. There is a famous tourist spot in Nagasaki called “Holland Hill” with stone pavements. This may be the place where the heroine in the lyrics and her lover used to date and fall in love. That's why she felt sad and depressed when she walked alone on the stone pavement road.
