Indiana Jones in Real Life | The Ruins of YAXCHILAN, Chiapas Mexico

Yaxchilan's original name was likely Pa' Chan. The name Yaxchilan means "Green Stones" in one of the local Mayan languages. The city was a very active and prosperous place for hundreds of years and dates back to the year 320 CE up to around the year 800 CE. Yaxchilan was in a strategic trade region being right on the river, and it had many wars with rival cities such as Piedras Negras, Palenque, Tikal, and maybe even Tonina. Yaxchilan is significant in modern Maya archeology because of the exquisite preservation of its sculptures. In particular the door lintels of its temples.

Getting to Yaxchilan is really an adventure in and of itself. This place is so off grid. To be completely honest you will probably feel a bit out of your comfort zone coming here. I know we sure did.
