Heart attacks and cardiovascular disease remain the leading cause of death worldwide, yet one of the most powerful prevention strategies ever tested comes not from a drug or medical procedure, but from a Mediterranean diet rich in extra virgin olive oil.
In this video I break down the PREDIMED trial, one of the most influential nutrition studies ever published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The study followed more than 7,500 people at high cardiovascular risk for nearly five years and found that a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra virgin olive oil or nuts reduced major cardiovascular events by around 31%.
That means fewer heart attacks, strokes, and cardiovascular deaths in a population already at high risk.
We’ll look at what the PREDIMED study actually did, what a Mediterranean diet really looks like in practice, and why foods like extra virgin olive oil, nuts, vegetables, legumes, and oily fish influence inflammation, cholesterol oxidation, endothelial function, and long-term cardiovascular health.
As an emergency medicine doctor working in the NHS, I spend much of my time treating the end stages of cardiovascular disease — heart attacks, strokes, and the complications that occur years after the underlying damage has already begun. But much of that risk develops slowly over decades, and the research around prevention is far more powerful than many people realise.
The Mediterranean diet is not a quick fix or a fad diet. It’s one of the most consistently supported dietary patterns in medical research, with strong evidence for reducing cardiovascular disease risk and improving metabolic health.
In this video we’ll look at what the science actually shows — and how simple dietary habits can have a meaningful effect on long-term heart health.
