Today, we will talk about script kiddies, also known as skiddies.
Script kiddies are hacker wannabes, but unlike real hackers, they often lack the technical understanding of hacking. So, let's break down what that slang actually means.

Think of script kiddies as the amateurs of the hacking world. They don't have the deep knowledge to customize their own attacks, so they use ready-made programs and scripts to carry out the hacks.

The motivations differ significantly if we compare real hackers to the script kiddies.
While skiddies hack for “fun” and for attention, real hackers might have more serious goals in mind.
For example, they might steal valuable data or shut down entire systems. Script kiddies might lack deep understanding of hacking techniques, but that doesn’t mean they are harmless. They can cause significant damage to websites and disrupt system operations.
So, what are the most common types of script kiddie attacks?

Script kiddies use pre-made tools to launch attacks. First on the list are DDoS attacks, where “skiddies” use off-the-shelf scripts to disrupt a website by overwhelming it with a flood of traffic.

Next on the list are web defacement attacks. Some scripts let the script kiddies alter and replace certain website elements, usually images and design assets. These acts of vandalism might not damage the website’s functionality, but can expose its security vulnerabilities, leading to more serious cyber threats.

And last but not least: SQL injections. Script kiddies inject malicious queries into input forms like search bars or login fields. They perform these attacks on unsecured websites to increase the chance of a breach.

But I have some good news! It’s not that hard to stay safer online! Even basic security solutions can do the job and protect you from these hacks.

For example, firewalls provide pretty robust security against many common attack vectors. Intrusion detection systems are a good antidote for brute-force attacks. While access controls limit the capability of script kiddies to gain access to systems. Users often overlook things such as consistent updates and patch management. These updates might address application or network vulnerabilities that skiddies try to exploit. Finally, using two-factor authentication and password managers to protect different accounts is a good idea!

All in all, script kiddies might lack understanding and real hacking knowledge, but their attacks can still be damaging. So securing your online accounts and websites should be a priority.
