The Malayan Campaign—referred to by Japanese sources as the Malay Operation (馬来作戦, Maree Sakusen)—was a major military campaign fought in Malaya between Allied and Axis forces from 8 December 1941 to 15 February 1942 during the Second World War.
The campaign was characterized primarily by land battles between the British Commonwealth forces and the Imperial Japanese Army, with only minor clashes at the outset involving the British Commonwealth and the Royal Thai Police. From the very beginning, the Japanese enjoyed air and naval supremacy, which gave them a decisive advantage.
For the defending British, Indian, Australian, and Malayan troops, the campaign ended in a complete disaster, culminating in the fall of Singapore—the largest surrender in British military history.
