Born in the UK, David Akers-Jones has played an important role in Hong Kong’s history since he arrived at what was then a British territory in 1957. He served in a number of posts, starting with the Commerce and Industry Department and working his way through the ranks until he eventually became chief secretary in 1985. After the sudden death of then-Hong Kong governor Edward Youde in 1986, Akers-Jones became acting governor until April 1987.
He made history in 1973 with a visit to Beijing, becoming the first Hong Kong civil servant allowed into the mainland after the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.
Akers-Jones retired from the Hong Kong government in 1987 but he and his wife chose to stay in the city. He says after more than 60 years here, he feels more emotionally attached to Hong Kong than to the United Kingdom. The retired British colonial administrator reflected on some of Hong Kong’s most significant historical events in an interview with the South China Morning Post.
