What is an Aufruf? Is that even Hebrew? No! It's Yiddish, which still makes it a nice Jewish word for how we honor a couple about to get married. The engaged couple comes to the synagogue on the Shabbat (or other Torah reading day) shortly before their wedding, and they are given the honor of an aliyah (another nice Jewish word for blessing God before and after a Torah reading - see here: ). The presiding rabbi may give them an additional blessing, and sometimes we throw candy at the couple. There we go throwing candy again.
