The knee cut pass is one of the most common and effective guard passes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Normally, when the top player initiates a knee cut, the bottom player frames, creates space, and looks to recover full guard. While this is a safe and reliable way to defend, it often keeps you stuck in a defensive cycle until you can off-balance the passer.
Another high-percentage option against the knee cut pass is wrestling up into a single leg sweep. By choosing to wrestle up instead of only relying on guard retention, you can turn a defensive situation into an offensive one—forcing the top player to deal with your attacks instead of the other way around.
In this video, we break down:
When to wrestle up vs. when to retain guard during a knee cut pass
The most common passing attempts you’ll encounter from the top player
How to counter those passes by wrestling up for a sweep
This is an essential concept for anyone looking to improve their BJJ guard retention, passing counters, and wrestling integration on the mats.
