Travel back to 1965 to see how Con Edison’s Stores Bureaus helped supply the big city with power by purchasing and stocking coal, parts, and materials.
This video from 1965, shares information about the Con Edison Stores Bureaus. The stores bureaus are as vital to Con Edison as supply lines are to the movement of an army. As New York grows, so does its need for supply of electricity, gas and steam. Since the end of World War 2, about 3 times more office spaces have been built in Manhattan alone compared to the rest of the nation.
Throughout the city, over 300 apartment buildings have been completed in just one year, along with thousands of homes, offices, hospitals and more. As the city continues to grow, with no end in sight, the demand for power continues to zoom.
Back in 1965, Con Edison shared that between 1965 and 1970 they planned to invest 1 billion dollars in expansion of new power plants. They shared how they were working to expand and strengthen the transmission lines. Learn how much the purchasing team spends on materials, parts, coal, gas, and more.
Con Edison kept enough coal on-hand (about 9 million dollars worth) to keep New York powered for 2-3 weeks to get ahead of any supply chain disruptions. For oil, Con Edison's oil storage tanks could hold up to 40 million gallons of oil (about 2 million dollars worth). As far as parts and materials, Con Edison stored over 100,000 items for routine maintenance and emergencies.
To keep everything running smoothly, and maintain supplies, the Stores Bureaus force employed over 600 people. They worked in 27 store rooms throughout our service area.
The Master Index, the Stores Bureaus control center, holds records of every one of the items purchased and stocked by stores from pumps to pens. To keep up with demands, materials would arrive daily to all store rooms. Incoming items were checked against purchase orders, and inspected to ensure they reached Con Edison standards.
