Johannes Gerhardus ('Hans') Strijdom fought for nearly 30 years for a South African Republic free from British influence. He died merely 3 years before the Union of South Africa became a Republic outside the British Commonwealth in 1961 under Dr. H. F. Verwoerd. During his premiership (1954-1958), South Africa was to have one flag and one national anthem. The Union Jack was lowered, and God Save the Queen was no longer heard.
This video is dedicated to this remarkable Afrikaner, nicknamed 'The Lion of the North.' Suffering from a heart condition, he refused to resigned as Prime Minister. He wanted to fight until the very end. He died in office in 1958, unselfishly sacrificing his own health, and life, for his own people and a Republic.
He never wanted entitlements from the State as Prime Minister. For example, when visiting his farm, he drove the Prime Ministerial car himself, carefully recording the mileage, which he then paid back from his own pocket.
He was married to a gifted pianist, Sann, who was a great inspiration for him.
