"After our week-long hiatus, I'm back with one more Beatles' arrangement to round out this set. We go back to a bit earlier in their catalog and to the album "Help" to find "I've Just Seen a Face." Arranging songs that originally relied heavily on strumming guitars always presents some sort of challenge on the piano. How do you keep the beat driving forward without making the music too loud? How do you keep the intensity created by all of that strumming? And how can you keep the rhythm similar enough to be recognizable, but more playable on the piano and more idiomatic for a pianist? Despite this song not having any roots in jazz, I've used something like the stride piano style to find answers to many of those questions. The first verse of the song begins with the left hand playing primarily the syncopated notes of the rhythm. Then it moves into a "faux-stride" style in which the left hand chords are broken and alternating, but not larger than an octave. About halfway through, we come closest to what stride piano is known for: jumps that span about two octaves, bottom notes being an open octave and top notes filling out the chord. There's a bit in the middle of the video of my "top-down" view showing this style of playing.
