Religious teachings and traditions teach their followers that there are at least three Archangels.
But some traditions teach there may be as many as twenty-two total Archangels.
And in the Roman Catholic Church, the teachings limit the Archangels to just three, Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael.

I believe that an exact numbering of the Archangels is not as important as understanding their roles, their significance and how they have been created by God, to serve as messengers and guides for humankind.

In the hierarchy of angel beings, the Archangels were and are the bosses of the Guardian Angels, the Spirit Guides and Loved Ones who have died and on occasion appear to family members.

The Archangels, according people who study angels, were charged with the protection of people and nations.
Also, each Archangel had a specific name that could be used to call them for help.

The Gospel of Luke says that the Archangel Gabriel came to Mary to tell her that she would give birth to a son. The Archangel told Mary that she should call her son Jesus.

In the New Testament book of Jude verse 9 we read about Michael the Archangel.

"But Michael the Archangel, when he disputed with the devil and argued about the body of Moses, did not dare pronounce against him a strong judgment, but said, 'The Lord rebuke you!' Archangels serve God in the Heavens and on Earth, and their missions are often closely connected with helping everyday people in times of need.
And their presence has been documented in many of the world’s religions.
