President Donald Trump has announced plans to build the first new major oil refinery in the United States in nearly half a century, located at the Port of Brownsville in Texas. The project is being developed by a small company called America First Refining and is expected to receive backing from India’s energy conglomerate Reliance Industries, one of the largest oil refiners in the world.
If completed, the refinery would process roughly 60 million barrels of American shale oil annually, producing fuels for domestic and export markets. The project is estimated to cost up to $4 billion and could process more than 1 billion barrels of US shale oil over its lifetime, generating tens of billions in refined fuel output.
