In this video I take a look at a tape recorder that was sold at Radio Shack in the late 1980s. This was the Realistic CTR 76 Voice Actuated Cassette Recorder.
I recall this style of tape recorder was very popular at that time. As I mention in the video, micro cassette machines were definitely popular in the late 80s, but people were also buying a lot of these handheld cassette recorders as well.
This thing is built like a brick, and even looks and feels like one. It is nothing if not sturdy. It has a built in microphone, and operates on 4 AA batteries. Back in the day, this thing sold brand new for about $50.
These machines were used in a number of ways. Students would use them to record lectures. Journalists and reporters would use them for interviews. People would use them to record their own dictation for a variety of reasons. They were certainly very popular.
So how does this one work? Where did I find it? Is it any good? Watch the video to find out!
