This is one of the lowest paying – and most dangerous - jobs in an African refugee camp. Can you guess what it is?
• The camp tanners buy wet animal skins from the refugee camp butchers – usually goats, since they’re cheap.
• They have to work quickly or the skins will rot.
• They soak the skins for days in pits full of water. This softens them and loosens hair, fat, and debris. (the hair gets sold for stuffing).
• They then stretch them out and flesh them – cut away unwanted fat and flesh. This also removes the hair.
• Once fleshed, they scrape the hides to further clean them, being careful not to cut or damage the leather.
• They then soak them in a tanning pit. Urine, seeds, ash are often added to help loosen what little hair or flesh remains. If they wait too long or use too many additives then the hides may develop holes or decay.
• They scrub each hide like laundry for several hours to try to soften it.
• They hang the hides in the sun to dry, then scrape them again (and again) to soften the rigid leather.
Two weeks work will earn them 90 cents per hide.
