"Maestà" by Duccio di Buoninsegna (1308–1311) stands as one of the most iconic masterpieces of medieval Italian art and a cornerstone of the Sienese school of painting. Created for the main altar of Siena Cathedral, this monumental double-sided altarpiece originally measured over 4 meters in width and features a stunningly detailed Madonna and Child enthroned, surrounded by a majestic assembly of angels and saints.
Painted in tempera and gold on wood, the front side of the Maestà displays the Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven, radiating divine grace and acting as Siena's heavenly protector. The Madonna is shown tenderly holding the Christ Child, embodying both divine serenity and human intimacy. Surrounding them are rows of saints and angels rendered with refined elegance, harmonious color palettes, and gilded detailing typical of Byzantine and Gothic influences.
The reverse of the altarpiece tells the Life of Christ through a complex narrative cycle spread across dozens of panels, showcasing Duccio’s skill as a storyteller. His pioneering use of space, perspective, and emotional depth helped transition Italian art toward the Renaissance, influencing generations of artists including Simone Martini and the Lorenzetti brothers.
Today, the Maestà is carefully preserved in the Museo dell'Opera Metropolitana del Duomo in Siena, a true treasure of early 14th-century Italian devotional art.
