After a long and risky 240km journey on our Activa, we finally reached Gangotri. After a restful night, we woke up early to the sound of the roaring river for our Darshan.
The Sacred History:
In this video, I shared the beautiful story of the Bhagirathi River.
The Name: The river is called Bhagirathi here because of King Bhagiratha, whose intense penance (tapasya) brought the Goddess Ganga down from heaven to earth.
The Origin: While the temple is in Gangotri, the true source of the river is Gomukh, a glacier located about 18 to 19 km further trek from the temple. It is the spot where the river first emerges from the ice.
The Spiritual Experience:
We visited the Ganga Ghat, where the water is freezing but incredibly pure. Taking a holy dip (snanam) there washed away all our travel exhaustion. We then visited the Ganga Mata Temple. Even though cameras are not allowed inside the sanctum, the spiritual energy was amazing. We completed our Darshan, explored the surrounding shrines, and collected some sacred Ganga Jal to take back home.
