When John Coates was working on Wall Street during the dot-com bubble, he watched sensible traders transform into manic money-makers. What was happening? Was it greed, or something deeper—molecular even? To find out what happens to humans during the market's ups and downs, Coates left his job to study neurology and neuroendocrinology. Now, Coates offers lessons from the exploding new field of the biology of risk, explaining how shifts in our physiology have profound effects on our abilities to respond to stress, make decisions, and lead with success.
Coates is a senior research fellow at the University of Cambridge. He previously worked for Goldman Sachs and ran a trading desk for Deutsche Bank in New York. In 2004, he returned to Cambridge to research the biology of financial risk-taking. His research has attracted interest from business, medicine, the military, as well as elite sports teams. The journal Foreign Policy named him one of the most influential thinkers of 2012.
He is the author of The Hour Between Dog and Wolf: Risk Taking, Gut Feelings and the Biology of Boom and Bust, which was short-listed for both the FT-Goldman Business Book of the Year, and the UK Welcome Trust Science Prize. It was also chosen book of the month by the British Army.
His work has been published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and The Financial Times, and has been cited in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Economist, New Scientist, Wired and Time. Coates has appeared on CNN, CNBC, BBC, CBS Evening News and Good Morning America.
