World’s First Standalone Spin-wave Chip That Operates Without External Magnets
Researchers at the Politecnico di Milano have developed the world’s first standalone spin-wave chip that operates without external magnets, marking a major step toward next-generation communication technologies beyond 5G and 6G. The breakthrough, published in *Advanced Materials*, brings the emerging field of magnonics closer to real-world applications.
Magnonics uses spin waves—collective vibrations of electron spins in magnetic materials—to transmit and process signals instead of electric currents. Spin waves can operate at high frequencies while consuming less energy, but until now they required bulky external magnetic fields, making chip integration impractical.
The new device overcomes this challenge by using permanent samarium–cobalt (SmCo) micromagnets and magnetic flux concentrators built directly onto the chip. This design eliminates the need for external magnets and allows full integration on silicon. The chip is extremely compact, measuring just 100 × 150 micrometers.
At its core is a CoFeB spin-wave guide with input and output antennas. By precisely controlling the internal magnetic field, the device can operate between 3 and 8 GHz and tune signal phase efficiently. The prototypes already work as time delay lines and phase shifters, key components in telecom systems.
This innovation opens the door to smaller, low-power, and reconfigurable communication hardware, with potential applications in future wireless networks, consumer electronics, automotive systems, and high-frequency signal processing.
