In this video, I summarize the entire storyline called “Why do things get colder (or hotter) when they react?” The storyline starts with student-guided inquiries of endo- and exothermic chemical and physical reactions. Then the storyline dives into the modeling of breaking and making bonds through the use of a ramp, magnet and marble set-up before going into a computer simulation meant to deepen the understanding of the bonding concept. Through the compilation of discussion boards and model creations, the storyline comes to an end when students draw the connections between the kinetic energy, bond strength, and potential energy of chemical species and how these determine the endo- vs exothermic nature of a reaction.
⏱ TIMESTAMPS:
00:00 Why implement storyline teaching
00:43 How many class periods does this storyline require
01:01 First: Students start with observations of endo- and exothermic reactions
01:23 Second: Students manipulate a hands-on model for bond breaking and making
01:48 Third: Students play with a simulation that models the breaking and making of bonds
03:23 Fourth: Students explore additional chemical reactions
04:47 Fifth: Students compile all their questions on a Discussion Board
05:33 Sixth: Students create their own specific model of either endo- or exothermic reactions
07:37 Seven: Students revise their model to apply to both endo- and exothermic reactions
08:28 Eight: Students go back and review and revise their Discussion Board
