Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has announced ‘substantial reforms’ to the UK’s ‘unfair and outdated’ asylum system - as the government vowed to close all hotels housing migrants “for good.” She claimed that Labour inherited an asylum system "in chaos" when they won power last year, and insisted that "substantial reforms are needed now". This follows a weekend where anti-asylum protests continued across the country, seeing people arrested in Essex and London.
James O'Brien considers how can a 'rational conversation' about migration can be had 'when the whole world has gone mad'.
30 | "They put so much effort into demonising the other."
00 | "How do you operate in a world where everybody is pretending that the single most significant issue in the country is former hotels?"
02 | "How should we be conducting ourselves in the context of this insane public discourse?"
58 | "It's like the Craig David school of racist agitation."
50 | "It's like a racist groundhog day."
32 | "If you are literally the only one telling the truth in a world full of liars I think you might go mad."
00 | "When the government joins in, you can't insist that people get over themselves."
.19 | "Who is Keir Starmer trying to appeal to?"
45 | "You can't have a government based entirely on being the least bad available option."
