The walled house, known as Daoyun Lou, is a Hakka tulou (earthen building) located in Chaozhou, Guangdong.
It was first built in 1477 and took over 110 years across three generations to complete, finally finishing in 1587, the 15th year of the Wanli reign in the Ming dynasty.
Daoyun Lou is the largest octagonal Hakka Tulou in China.
The building is full of multiples of eight — with 72 rooms, 32 wells, and 112 staircases, symbolising harmony and prosperity.
