Do you want to improve your metal vocals? Then this video is exactly what you need. This video will (hopefully) help you make your metal vocals 10 times better. The best thing: this tutorial is very simple to follow. We’re beginners ourselves but have learned some tips and tricks that we want to share with you. 🤘
In this video, we show how through relaxation you can scream a lot easier and sound better with less effort. Not only will this prevent throat pain, but it will also make your screams sound much stronger and fuller. A good warm-up is very important for this, and we want to give you some insights into how we practice and warm up for our metal vocals. You can also use some items to help you along the way, like a silicon straw to loosen your larynx and throat in general.
For our warm-up routine, we use a standard vocal warm-up exercise (in our case, from a lesson by Melissa Cross, whom most of you know from The Zen of Screaming). To get into our false cord screams, we also use an exercise called "The Dog," which helps you work on transitioning your normal singing/talking voice into your screams - as long as you are gentle.
After that, we like to practice throat singing, also known as Kargyraa. Staying relaxed in your throat is very important! Kargyraa is also a great way to find the right distortion placement (you know you got it if you your throat singing is very smooth, painless, and loud, it also should vibrate in your throat) and then smoothly transition into your screams.
Once we’ve completed this, we can transition from our singing voice into Kargyraa and finally into our full scream - all in one breath. You’ll see how cool this can sound, and, as we’ve mentioned, the key to this is relaxation.
On our screaming journey, distortion placement has been one of our biggest challenges. Again, Kargyraa has helped us a lot here. When you go from throat singing to screaming, the distortion placement stays the same! If Kargyraa isn’t working for you yet, there are also some tricks you can use to find the "sweet spot" for your distortion placement. The key is to feel your scream in your soft palate, at the back of your mouth, above your true cords. Make sure your screams aren’t just coming from your throat - feel them at the top of your mouth. Finally, the fastest way to improve your screams immediately is by using filters. Changing the shape of your mouth or tongue can completely alter the sound of your screams. For example, tunnel throat, gutturals, and pig squeals are only possible through the use of different filters. Be creative - this is where the fun begins! :)
And as proof that it works: we’ll show you a before-and-after comparison using these tutorial steps.
