I came home to a surprise a few days ago: my Spot Cheek Cichlid pair (Thorichthys maculipinnis, (formerly known as Thorichthys Ellioti) had apparently spawned and hatched eggs successfully somewhere in the tank without my realizing it and had now moved what looked like hundreds of ‘wiggler’ stage fry to the front left corner of the tank.
Cichlids are amazing parents; It has been really fascinating seeing them grow, and watching Blue and Queen B care for their young. They move the babies around to different spots through the day, keep them from wandering off, and fiercely defend them from becoming snacks for rest of the tank inhabitants, even taking on Mayhem (the electric blue Jack Dempsey) at one point. Three days after I first discovered them, the fry are now free-swimming and starting to eat.
