STORYLINE:
European Union monitors continued their mission in Georgia on Thursday, with a delegation visiting a Russian checkpoint at Karaleti, on the perimeter of Russia's so-called "security zone" on Georgian territory.
A Russian statement on Tuesday, which said monitors would not be allowed on Georgian territory around the separatist region of South Ossetia, had raised concern that Moscow was stalling on withdrawing its troops from Georgia as it promised to do after the August war with Georgia.
But when EU observers arrived on Wednesday at Russian checkpoints near the Georgian villages of Karaleti and Kvenatkotsa, Russians quickly let them move into the area.
The Russian soldiers didn't allow reporters to follow the observers into the buffer zone near Kvenatkotsa, but let Georgian civilians pass after examining their vehicles.
EU monitors visiting the Karaleti checkpoint on Thursday were led by Pawel Bartlomiej Piskorski, Vice Chairman of the EU's Delegation for relations with the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
He said the purpose of the visit was to check Russia was fulfilling its agreements under a French-brokered cease-fire deal, and also to assess the needs of Georgia following the war.
"I would say that we perfectly know that Russian standards of dealing with international policy is different from ours, and we will try to do everything to change their way of thinking", he added.
Another group of EU monitors visited the village of Akhmaji, the last village before the so-called buffer-zone surrounding South Ossetia, where they could be seen using binoculars to observe Russian troop movement.
