In this talk, I reflect on what history, geopolitics, and the Buddha Dharma reveal about the decline of empires and the deeper forces of human nature behind them.
Why do great powers rise, expand, and eventually fall?
From Rome and Spain to Britain, the Soviet Union, and the modern United States, the pattern repeats: imperial overreach, debt spirals, currency debasement, social decay, and loss of trust in institutions. Beneath all of this lies something more fundamental — our tendencies toward tribalism, arrogance, fear, and craving for dominance.
Drawing on examples from history and current events, I explore how attempts to resist impermanence only accelerate collapse, and how authoritarian reactions often deepen suffering rather than prevent it.
From the perspective of the theory of samsara, the decline of empire is not just an economic or political process — it is a karmic and psychological one. When nations are driven by pride, anger, and ignorance, they magnify the very causes of their own downfall.
In the end, empires turn to dust.
What remains meaningful is how we live here and now: whether we cultivate compassion, responsibility, and wisdom, or whether we continue to repeat the same destructive cycles.
If you’re interested in geopolitics, history, Buddhism, and the deeper patterns shaping our world, this reflection is for you.
🙏 Thank you for listening.
